With their extinction, it became a route for the drovers who traveled from RGS to São Paulo. Its name originated from the donation made by Pedro da Silva Chaves, militia captain of the Campos de Cima da Serra, who donated this area for the creation of a settlement, which became property of the Church, of which his son was the 1st Priest in 1762. He named the Church after his patron saint, São Francisco de Paula, and the name initially adopted for the Region was São Francisco da Serra de Cima. Today it is known for its beautiful waterfalls and lovely green fields.
