VISIT TO PRAÇA MAL DEODORO –PRAÇA DA MATRIZ-As soon as the capital of Rio Grande do Sul was transferred from Viamão to Porto Alegre in 1773, the SQUARE became the political, cultural and social center of the city and the state, since the regional government, the IGREJA MATRIZ and the residential mansions of the powerful figures of the time were established there.

VISIT TO PALÁCIO PIRATINI –Interior visits by prior appointment only- Palácio Piratini is the current seat of the executive branch and the official residence of the State Governor, located on Praça Marechal Deodoro; its construction began in 1909 and it was inaugurated in 1921, when governor Borges de Medeiros (1863-1961) occupied the ground-floor premises.

VISIT TO TEATRO SÃO PEDRO-EXTERIOR– Horseshoe-shaped like the Portuguese theaters, its construction began in 1833, but the works suffered several delays and interruptions due to the Guerra dos Farrapos (Revolução Farroupilha) and the neoclassical-style building was only inaugurated on June 27, 1858

VISIT TO THE BIBLIOTECA PÚBLICA-EXTERIOR -Created by law No. 724 of April 14, 1871, the cultural institution gained importance both for its valuable collection and for its building − one of the most beautiful buildings in Rio Grande do Sul − listed as state and national historic and artistic heritage. The library maintains a diverse collection and access services for printed and digital materials, as well as a braille and audio collection.

CATEDRAL METROPOLITANA–INTERIOR VISIT-The history of the founding of the Paróquia Nossa Senhora Madre de Deus is closely tied to the origin of the city, at a time when the future city was just the port of Viamão-today the building measures 80 m in length and 47 m in width at the side apses; the dome reaches 65 m in height and 18 m in diameter; the towers reach 50 m in height and the main façade 30 m. The statues of the patriarchs, which stand out on the crowning of the central body of the building and on the towers, are 3 m tall. Inside the towers there are six bells, one of which weighs 3.800 kilos. In its interior spaces, the cathedral can seat about 1.100 people.

MARGS MUSEUM-INTERIOR VISIT-FREE-The Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul Aldo Malagoli (MARGS), an institution of the State Secretariat of Culture (Sedac), holds more than 5.000 works of art in its collection, from the first half of the nineteenth century to the present day, covering different languages of the visual arts, such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, drawing, textile art, photography, installation, performance, digital art and design, among others.

VISIT TO THE IGREJA DAS DORES-INTERIOR VISIT-In the Eclectic style, the Church is an important historical and cultural landmark of the city: at the national level, its recognition came in 1938, approximately thirty years after the completion of the building, when the temple was listed by IPHAN (NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HISTORIC AND ARTISTIC HERITAGE).

VISIT TO CITY HALL AND FONTE TALAVERA –EXTERIOR– The Paço Municipal de Porto Alegre, also known as Prefeitura Velha or Paço dos Açorianos, is a historic building and one of the most characteristic and important architectural landmarks of the city. Inaugurated in 1901, designed by Giovani Colfosco, for a long time it housed the mayor’s office and administrative bodies. Listed by the municipality in 1979, after an extensive renovation in 2003, it began to lend some rooms for art exhibitions, and it also houses the offices and the technical storage of the art collection of the Porto Alegre City Hall.

MERCADO PÚBLICO-INTERIOR VISIT- A landmark of the tradition and culture of Rio Grande do Sul, it is a supply center located in the heart of the city. Inaugurated on October 3, 1869, it is the oldest in Brazil, and has more than a hundred establishments offering a diverse range of activities.
