Starting in 1884 the first masonry floor was built and it also came to house the Italian Consulate, which provided assistance to the immigrants arriving in the region. In 1982 the building was renovated and the upper floor was built. It is currently considered the oldest Masonry Building in the Serra Gaúcha. The building was also used for welfare meetings, wedding parties and Italian classes, and during World War I, 1914 to 1918, it served as a hospital.FREE ADMISSION
09:30 TO 10:00 VISIT TO THE IGREJA MATRIZ SÃO PEDRO – In 1920 – on the night of June 18 – a fire destroyed the old church. The Parish Priest, João Fronchetti, now elderly, did not feel strong enough to face the challenge. It fell to Frei Bruno de Gillonnay – with the title of Pro – Parish Priest – to lead the construction. The Catholic community of Garibaldi and the region rallied and the church was inaugurated on March 15, 1924. It was the last work of Frei Bruno, who then returned to France, his homeland. Friars Miguel de Mollettes and Gentil de Caravaggio were tasked with paying off the debts, about 600 contos. The church’s plan came from France, inspired by the Basilica of Lourdes. The architectural style is pure Gothic. Given the poor materials of the time, the church had to be touched up several times to prevent its progressive deterioration. Starting in March 2014, a complete restoration of the church was again necessary, in accordance with all the rules that protect cultural heritage. In the words of Dom José Baréa – first bishop of Caxias do Sul, “it is the most beautiful church in the Italian colonial region”.FREE ADMISSION

ABOUT BENTO GONÇALVES–The colonization of this region began in 1875 with the settlement of the upper northeastern slope by Italian immigrants. Known as the Região da Cruzinha, an area for bartering goods and a resting place for drovers, it was named Colônia Dona Isabel. On average, 790 people arrived from the AUSTRIAN TYROL AND VENETO. They lived in a system of exchange, buying and selling goods and the services of blacksmiths, shoemakers, joiners, tailors and carpenters. Over time came the opening of roads and the growth of the population. Despite the difficulties, in 1877 the Colônia Dona Isabel was home to three commercial houses, two bakeries, a hat factory and a total of 40 commercial houses offering various services and products throughout the colony’s territory. It separated from Montenegro in 1890 and was named in honor of General Bento Gonçalves da Silva, leader of the Revolução Farroupilha, which took place in Rio Grande do Sul from 1835 to 1845. Its National prominence came in 1967 with the Creation of Fenavinho and the implementation of the Tourism and Events Sector for the Region.

The Italian immigrant, besides adopting the habit of drinking it, added the technology that allowed large-scale production. On site there is a demonstration of the artisanal production process with historic water-wheel-driven pestles. In the shop, which operates in the basement of the Ferrari family residence, the whole ritual of preparing the traditional gaúcho chimarrão is explained to the visitor, followed by a tasting of it.
